Twitter Wine Tasting #1

Project Vino, in association with WineStream and Kirrihill Wines of Clare Valley, is extremely excited to be hosting the World's First Twitter Wine Tasting.
.

What is it?

Twelve prominent Australian Twitter users will take part in an evolutionary new twist on the the traditional wine tasting format. What seperates this wine tasting is that the participants could be anywhere in the world. They could be in front of their computer at home or on their mobile phone in middle of the Sturt Desert. All will be connected in real-time however by the latest and greatest online communication tool - Twitter.
.

Three wines from Kirrihill Wines in the Clare Valley will be tasted on the night. Each one will be introduced by the MC of the tasting (Hugo Sharp from Project Vino) and then discussed on Twitter. Although separated by distance, the event will be highly engaging and personal. As with most, Twitter discussions, the conversation will likely spread to other online mediums such as blogs, podcasts and video. The wines to be tasted are;

Kirrihill Wines

  • Companions Cabernet Merlot ‘06
  • Companions Shiraz Viognier ‘06
  • Tempranillo Garnacha ‘07

Where is it?

Although the wine tasters could be anywhere in the world, the event will be viewable real-time here.
.

When is it?

The event will start at 7:00pm (AEST) Wednesday 30th of April.
.

Why is it so special?

Twitter (www.twitter.com) is the latest flavour of short-form, real-time online communication. Think blogging, but faster and more conversational. Twitter is a nexus for both conversations and thought leaders online. This event is one of the earliest instances of using Twitter to transfer an event as social and active as a wine tasting, into online realms. Also the participants are leaders in online media and the event will act as a test case for using these new communication tools, such as Twitter, to bridge the ever closing gap between society online and off.
.

Twitter Primer: (a personal perspective)

As a twitter user, I have a set list of friends who I converse with daily. Subject matter ranges from the day’s news, to events in my day, to the latest websites and gadgets. Networks crossover easily and often using twitter as I’m also exposed to the conversations of my friends with their network. Surprisingly though, I find some of its greatest value in fast and knowledgeable IT support. The users of twitter (and the people in my friends list) are quite simply ‘geeks’. That is to say that they are very passionate and very smart. The intelligence and enthusiasm of the twitter user base, combined with the immediacy of twitter, means that ideas, thoughts and questions are generated and discussed across multiple networks of friends.

Participant FAQ

What time do i show up?

Be on twitter anytime before 7pm on the night (Wed 30th April).

How do i follow the it?

Most participants will already be subcribed to all other participants but if not, view all the Twitter action here Be sure to press F5 to refresh your screen regularly.

How long will it take?

The formal structured bit will take under an hour. (The slurred tweets afterwards may go on a bit longer though.)

What's the format?

@projectvino will MC the event. We'll taste the first wine at 7:00pm, the second one at 7:15pm and the third at 7:30pm. During the event, please add @projectvino to each tweet so we can track the conversation.

Who's involved?

There's 15 tweet majors around Oz who have received wine samples. @projectvino is hosting the event, Kirrihill wines has generously supplied the wines and WineStream greased the wheels.

Where can i find out about the wines?

Visit the Kirrihill page on Project Vino here. Or see the links to the individual wines near the top of the page.

What else can I do?

What ever you want around the structure mentioned above. Do stuff online or offline but just make twitter one of the central communication lines.

  • Some ppl are cooking a nice dinner to go with the wines. @zbender has suggested these great Bill Granger recipes: Chickpea Stew, Spaghetti, Spicy Beef and a Side Salad.
  • Some people are inviting friends over and making a party of it.
  • There's been talk of UStreams happening.
  • Record you opinion of the wines on Project Vino here or print off our "Hipster Wine Notebook" here.
  • Blog about the event or the wines.

What's the point of it all?

Fun first of all - I (@hugosharp) wanted to have a physical twitter event which ppl all over Oz could attend. Testing the medium secondly - this will be a good test to see how well twitter (et all) can be used for specific physical events where the participants are decentralised (product launches, etc).
