This is a very new zone but it’s already showing amazing potential. Firstly its soil – red sandy loam over limestone – is similar to Coonawarra’s, and its climate is decidedly cool. Secondly, it has attracted considerable attention from major players such as Cellarmasters and Kreglinger Australia, some top winemakers, and from France, M. Chapoutier, one of the most famous wine companies of the Rhône Valley.
Shiraz and Chardonnay are the two most exciting varietals, followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and the latest, Viognier. The Shiraz is usually an intense red with mulberry, blackberry and pepper aromas and flavours. The Chardonnay is often a more elegant style than other regions with melon and lychee aromas and the addition of some creamy tropical flavours – along with the passionfruit and gooseberry nuances of the Sauvignon Blanc – just perfect with the local fish and seafood.
All the signs are that the Limestone Coast is set to become an important region in the Australian wine scene.
