Regional Bio
This very old winemaking region is one of the most important red wine regions of Australia because of its wine production on a large scale. The massive Beringer Blass and Lindemans both have major plantings in the region that are used extensively not only in their ‘iconic’ red wines but in their everyday reds as well.
As much as the region is about wine production on a large scale, the people you really come to see at Langhorne Creek are the smaller winemakers that have begun to produce some good quality organic reds.
Situated near the shores of Lake Alexandrina, where the Murray River finds its way into the sea, the rich flood-plain soils, complemented by a warm climate with a cooling sea breeze, produce very distinctive red wines characterised by their ‘soft’ mouthfeel. The Cabernet Sauvignon often has minty-blackcurrant aromas and flavours while the Shiraz wines display eucalypt, blackberry and aniseed characteristics.
Langhorne Creek has become a popular tourist destination due its proximity to Adelaide (just 45 minutes drive) and Lake Alexandrina being a natural home to many water sports.
