Profile
VINEYARD
The Edwards family’s Serendipity vineyard at Birdwood. The vines are planted in a north south orientation on loam over podzol soils at 380 metres above sea level. The grapes were hand-picked on 10 March at 12.6º Baumé.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Excellent conditions prevailed in the Adelaide Hills during the shorter than usual 2007 growing season, with warm days and cool nights resulting in steady flavour development and acidity retention. The Pinot Grigio was harvested three weeks earlier than 2006 with significantly reduced yields due to the drought and disease problems were minimal.
WINEMAKING
We chose to hand-pick the grapes early making a more restrained and mineral style of wine in keeping with Pinot Grigio’s northern Italian origins. The grapes were gently crushed and pressed followed by cool fermentation of the free-run juice in stainless steel vats prior to stabilisation and filtering. The wine was deliberately left unwooded to retain its delicious fresh fruit characteristics.
WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES
A beautiful bright, pale straw-yellow in colour with lovely aromas of tart apple, juicy pear and a hint of spice. A restrained, mineral palate with zesty citrus and stone-fruit flavours. This is a crisp and refreshing wine, with delicate yet intense fruit flavours.
