The Barossa Valley must be seen as the home of the Australian wine industry due its big, bold, typically Australian, Shiraz that is now known around the world from its flagship brand, Jacobs Creek, and the birthplace of Australia’s greatest red wine, Grange. It is also the Aussie pioneer of France’s Rhone Valley blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mouvedre.
Most of the country’s largest wine companies house their major infrastructure in the Barossa – Wolf Blass, Orlando, Penfolds, Seppelt and Yalumba.
Vines were first planted in the area in the 1840s when English and Lutheran immigrants settled in the region. Its has a rich cultural heritage owing largely to its virtues on free enterprise and free thought unlike the Eastern states which relied heavily on convict labour. The Lutheran influence can still be seen today in the architecture of the villages and fine cuisine found throughout the valley.
There are now over 60 wineries in the Barossa Valley.
