An evening of New Zealand wines at The Burlington Crows Nest By The Dozen are extremely excited about the venue for their November wine dinner, The Burlington in Crows Nest. The wine region focus of the evening will be New Zealand. The Kiwis have made a huge impact on the Australian wine scene over the last ten years. New Zealand wines now represent more than half of all wines imported into Australia by volume and value. Most of this is white wine and most of it Sauvignon Blanc. Australians can’t seem to get enough of it! Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is not the whole story though. The quality of New Zealand’s Pinot Noir is staggeringly good with different styles coming from the various regions, Central Otago the emerging star. New Zealand Chardonnays are just as diverse with those from Gisborne probably best known. New Zealand is also becoming known for its aromatic whites, like Pinot Gris, Gewurtztraminer and Riesling. You will sample a total of ten different wines across a broad range of varieties; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, a full flight of Pinot Noir and one of Cabernet Merlot all matched with The Burlington’s superb cuisine. The countdown is on for the 2008 Barossa Wine Show, with judging taking place in just two weeks. All entries for the Show have been received and the committee is putting the finishing touches on their plans for the week of events. The 2008 Show has a record 619 entries, with almost 40% from an exciting contingent of smaller winemakers. To mark the occasion, the 2008 Barossa Wine Show program will include a dedicated public tasting. Allister Ashmead, chairman of Wine Barossa, says “It’s fantastic to welcome so many passionate small winemakers into our regional show, showing the strength and variety of the Barossa.” Wine lovers and savvy wine drinkers will be afforded this rare opportunity to taste hundreds of premium Barossa wines including all the trophy winners at a special tasting. The Public Tasting will take place on Saturday 20 September from 10.00am to 1.00pm at Peter Lehmann Wines in Tanunda. Cost of entry is $25 which includes a complimentary Barossa glass.

Wine Focus Australia is an exciting showcase for Australia’s premium winemakers. The second annual Sydney event is at the MCA at the Quay, on August 21 & 22. Wine Focus Australia includes only wineries that rate 4 stars or more in James Halliday’s 2008 Wine Companion. This ensures that all the wines on show are from quality winemakers, and with over 40 wine companies, there’s an exciting range of truly outstanding wines to try. The better known names amongst the exhibitors include Howard Park, Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran, Zema Estate and Stella Bella. Newer wineries will be exhibiting in Sydney for the first time, so there is an opportunity to see several exciting new labels, as well as new vintages of some of Australia’s classics like Langi Shiraz, Yering Station Shiraz Viognier, Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay, and Zema Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon As with all Wine Focus events, all wines will be served and tasted in Riedel glasses, the glassware of choice for judges at Australia’s top wine shows.
